Building and having a root cellar is a very good idea for anyone serious about survival. Not only is an underground cellar a great place to keep food and supplies in which you may be stockpiling, how much you should things do "go South", an underground cellar can be a good place to stay (at least temporarily) until things calm down just and you can better access the situation "out there".
Root cellars were the original cellars .. For hundreds, maybe even tons of years, people get root cellars as cool, dry places to store dinner. The way I figure it, if it ain't broke, don't correct it. Obviously, the human race has managed to thrive and flourish, released think it's a good idea to in what our forefathers did to survive harsh times.
By using the natural landscape available to us, we can basically build an underground storage facility, which can, once completed, blend right back into the landscape and be very hard to detect. Primarily based on how much period and energy you have, you can establish a very large undergound cellar, with rooms, shelving, good ventilation, etc. Or practical, then focus just dig a dent in the earth and stash some stuff in it-I would recommend hmo's!
